Bombshell...

Spring Hill City Administrator Announces Retirement

SPRING HILL - City Administrator Ken York gave notice Monday that he is retiring, Mayor Danny Leverette announced at the end of last night’s work session.

"It kind of comes as a surprise," Leverette said.

York’s 30-day notice would put his retirement date at Sept. 14, but with his accrued vacation time, his last day will actually be Aug. 31, Leverette said.

To make it official, the board will vote Monday to accept his retirement.

"We won’t make him draft his own resolution, I’ll be glad to draft it myself," said City Attorney Tim Underwood.

Leverette asked board members how they would feel about giving York three months of his salary, roughly $20,000, in appreciation of his work for the city in the last eight and a half years. He said the position will be advertised immediately and that he hopes to fill it by the end of this year or early next year. If that’s the case, Leverette said the three month’s salary won’t affect the budget.

"I hate to even think about voting on a resolution to get rid of him," Vice Mayor Miles Johnson said. "That’s the least I think we can do to show our appreciation. We hate to lose him."

I'll have more time to comment later...

The letter read at last night's meeting:

Dear Mayor:

We have discussed many times my intent to retire some time in the fall of 2007. I feel that this is the most opportune time for me to do just that given the current growth and departmental structure now existing in the city.

I am therefore submitting my request for retirement to be effective September 14, 2007. I am also requesting that I be allowed to use my accumulated vacation time as part of this thirty day notice which will effectively vacate my office on August 31, 2007.

I express my deep appreciation to you and the Board of Mayor and Aldermen for eight and a half wonderful years as city administrator for the city of Spring Hill.

I offer any assistance that I may give during the transition period to a new administrator.

Sincerely,
Ken York

Not that I have anything against the guy, but why on earth is the mayor offering to give him some kind $20,000 bonus for leaving?

I can think of about a million other things we can do with OUR money than start handing out extra's to retiring city employees that the city and the employee did not agree on in their employment contract.

Shoot, maybe I just need to get a job with the city and try to get in on the action.

DRM,
I agree 100% That is one heck of a gold watch.

Nothing personal to Ken at all... But, the $20k retirement bonus is completely unacceptable. It is a slap in the face to every taxpayer. Further, it is an extremely dangerous precedent to set. What's the deal with throwing money at retirees? First they tried the health care boondoggle and now this?

$20000 and Danny's take?

So is it true they went ahead and gave away $20k of OUR money?

Yep.... Gave it away. Eliot Mitchell was the only one with enough sense to vote against it.
