What exactly is the Maury Alliance doing courting a company with the history of W.R. Grace to Mt. Pleasant? Has the phrase "due diligence" ever come up? Not only would you not want to give W.R. Grace tax incentive to come to your city, you would probably do everything in your power to keep them from coming. At the very least I would suggest protecting yourself against future consequences.
Every one of you reading this website need to read this article by Ron DeYoung at the Maury News Net.

Columbia Daily Herald - W.R. Grace
Corporation has history of asbestos
By THOMAS MUNRO/Staff Writer
A plan to give a substantial tax break to a division of W.R. Grace & Co. to encourage their investment in the county has stalled after a local resident described W.R. Grace as a bad corporate citizen.
The County Commission Monday considered offering Grace Performance Chemicals, a division of Fortune 500 company W.R. Grace, a tax break roughly equivalent to three tax-free years. Grace Performance Chemicals would bring 60-100 jobs to the region with a factory producing Grace Ice & Water Shield, a new roofing product.
Local resident Ron DeYoung rose to speak about the company. DeYoung, a former resident of Libby, Mont., said Grace had not been “a good neighbor” in Libby.
Grace and several of its executives are under federal indictment for allegedly willfully allowing employees and citizens of Libby to be exposed to asbestos when, according to the indictment, Grace knew asbestos was dangerous.
DeYoung said he had lost friends in Libby to asbestos-related illnesses.
Grace was also one of two companies involved in the Woburn, Mass., contaminated-drinking-water case that inspired the 1998 film “A Civil Action.”
Commissioner Jerry Erwin, who said his father died of asbestosis, said he thought DeYoung had brought up important issues.
“From what this man has said, I think we need to dig into it real deep,” Erwin said.
The commission voted to defer a vote on the resolution.
Maury Alliance President Frank Tamberrino said he would ask Grace to tell him what materials are in Grace Ice & Water Shield. He said a month’s delay would probably not have any impact on the deal with Grace.
Is this really a reasonable direction for the Maury Alliance to be headed with respect to their community? I have contacted them via email and phone, you might want to do the same.

I just saw 'A Civil Action' on Showtime this weekend. Who would have ever thought that something like this would be so close to home?
Very concerning. How about another potentialy environmental disaster even closer to home called the "Shaffer System". Thompson Station is currently building their "Town" on this system which some describe as an open sewer pit. Disturbing because of the close proximity to Spring Hill. Thompson Station has allowed the opening of this system on the back of the 56 acre commercial development containing the "off-yellow submarine (CVS)", TSC, and soon to be others. Has anyone done any research on this system? Please help set my concerns at ease. Why didn't they connect to a 21st century sewer system?
I have seen the Sheaffer System in use in Cortland, IL and also in Lubbock, TX. You'll have a tough time convincing the owners of those million dollar houses that their community lagoon is an "open sewer pit". Rest assured, the Sheaffer System is a 21st century sewer system rather than the 20th century conventional sewer systems in use in Spring Hill.
Dr. Sheaffer you can stop your sales pitch it has already worked on the leadership of Thompson Station. I hope the gamble pays off with the systems being so near to Heritage Elementary, Heritage Middle, and Independance High. Don't claim it is a product of the 21st century when it was first developed in the late 1960's. Re-inventing the wheel?
Why dosen't Thompson Station have design standards? They proclaim to be progressive yet they are allowing companies such as CVS to build yellow buildings.
The developers are very excited about the Sheaffer system because they no longer have the limitations of the conventional sewer system. In other words, the Sheaffer system offers unlimited urban sprawl.
Brentwood has million dollar homes but you don't see them using reclaimed sewer water as their source of irrigation or community lagoons.
