I thought that I would give a little time this morning to a friend down south.
First Amendment Violated by Local Paper!

If there was only one thing that I could refer to that exhibits how great it is to be an American, my choice would be simple. Without a moment of hesitation I’d have to say the one thing to me is that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Those 45 words helped to make our country great! To this day, they continue to contain more wisdom, foresight and significance than anything written since.
That’s why I’m dumbfounded that The Columbia-Daily Herald splashes the First Amendment all over the Opinion page of their publication, while at the same time; hypocritically exhibit the arrogance to pick and choose when and how to use it, or who it should apply to. The First Amendment is a right enjoyed by all Americans, not just the ones you agree with or those who adhere to the rules of what is politically correct and safe – according to the Daily Herald.
Without providing a reason, the Columbia-Daily Herald has refused to run the following ad, paid for by MNN Corporation, the parent company of MauryNewsNet.com. We say that’s wrong and a blatant violation of not only our First Amendment rights, but those of our readers as well. They’ve simply disregarded the second two-thirds of it, and aren’t able to tell us why! That’s not a free press! That’s the type of behavior the First Amendment was written to prevent.
If the local newspaper is not willing to apply those words to each American equally, they should refrain from hiding behind it when it suits their needs. Perhaps they are controlled by the individual mentioned in the ad. What a sad day.

Gorilla,
Thanks for the plug. People coming together is what will make us successful in our endeavors.

I don't know anything about this particular newspaper or the issue at hand. However, claiming that a newspaper is violating the first amendment by refusing to print an ad in their paper is as ridiculous as claiming that every American should have their own opinion page in the newspaper. The first amendment, in this case, is protecting the newspaper. However, the first amendment doesn't require that any newspaper be forced to run an ad in their own publication if they don't want to. You can't seriously believe that your rights are being violated by a private newspaper not printing what you dictate any more than it's wrong that Kroger doesn't carry Sam's cola (where's our freedom of choice???).
As I stated earlier, I know nothing about the people or issues. Clicking on Ron's name reveals a web site with Maury news. Ron, if I send you an article to print claiming that I am King John and that I should rule all of Maury County and have the taxpayers buy me a palace filled with fountains and golden toilet seats, would you run it? Would it be violating my rights if you didn't? Of course not...it's YOUR site!
Criticize the paper's opinions or politics all you want. THAT is protected by the first amendment. But it drives me crazy when people use constitutional principles to make a free speech argument in this context. No offense intended to anyone.
Yes, I've been given the 30 lashes with a wet noodle and have become a better human because of it. I can only attribute my error to sleep deprivation and loss of focus. Thank you for pointing it out in a positive way.
