Have Sharon Cantrell and Viola Pickard lost their mind? No really, have they lost their mind? Ladies, if you read this please do not get your feelings hurt.
A few quotes taken from a recent Columbia Daily Herald article
Master Plan Proposal
"At a recent meeting, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved (6-3) a resolution to create a committee to form a master plan, with Alderman Charles Raines and Alderwomen Sharron Cantrell and Viola Pickard voting against the measure. Pickard said she voted against the plan because she views it as a drive for reapportionment, a move she said is not immediately necessary."
What in the world is she talking about? Developing a city plan has nothing whatsoever to do with reapportionment. I think that you might have been confused because the citizens in this city are firmly behind both, and both make pure common sense. Having said that they are no where near the same issue.
“I guess I would almost also concur with what Mrs. Pickard said,” she said. “Part of what’s presented is having a city planner, and I think we have the capabilities already here without hiring someone professionally. I voted against it and that’s one of the reasons that I did.”
Mrs. Cantrell, this resolution was to create a committee to look into developing a city plan. This resolution did not have a dollar figure attached, it did not hire a city planner, it did not really do anything other than acknowledge a problem and begin forming a committee to look into the matter. How in the world do you vote against that?
“I was shocked people voted against it,” Gallardo said. “If you’re driving to Florida, wouldn’t you want a map? If you’re building a house, wouldn’t you want a blue print? I think there’s some hidden agendas somewhere that are behind the scenes and they need to come out. We’re not going to move together, any place, until we find our differences.”
Mr. Gallardo, you are exactly correct! You could not have hit this any more on the head. I challenge you to get to the bottom of this hidden agenda with the BOMA. It would be comical to read about this in the paper if it were not so embarrassing. I wonder what hidden agendas you will find?
Now, same paper, different article.
GBT Realty Vote
“That road is unbelievably narrow and the volume of traffic even five years ago was minuscule compared to what we have going out there now.”
I defer to Silverback on this comment:
Apparently she feels that the city needs to perform the improvements to Duplex Road and Port Royal Road on its own, without the assistance from developers.
Mrs. Cantrell, where was the concern when you voted to approve the high density rezonings over the past couple of years for the following developments, less than 1/2 mile away (and in some cases, right next to, or across the street from GBT):
Crystal Springs Town Homes
Walden Creek Apartments
Williams Park II Town Homes
Wake Field
I am beginning to think that Magilla was right:
"GBT died for one reason....because Duda was for it. Everything he is for, there are 4 and sometimes 5 on the BOMA that are automatically against."

I would suggest that phone calls/emails be sent to her (or all) voicing criticisim and concern on this stance (although she might feel like she's a victim of a campaign of sorts). If this isn't NEON sign screaming "I want to retain as much power as possible", I don't know what is. If this type of mindset is carried forward and not fought against now there will be a large mess that will cost a lot more money to clean up after the fact.
Danny Leverette, it looks like you need to get your title of mayor back from Sharon Cantrell. Looks like she is in control now of our city. Kudos to Alderman Gallardo for having the insight to put together a proposal to defend the need for a city planner.
We are rapidly losing credibility as a city each time these articles hit the press. It says to the person considering moving to Spring Hill that it is apparent Spring Hill does not have their crap together.
Back on topic...
I think that Cantrell and Pickard honestly believe that they do represent all of the citizens, and probably sleep well at night knowing that they voted to protect the citizens from high denstiy on Duplex Road. It is unfortunate that they believe that forming a committee to discuss a master plan for the city is anything more than that.
Here is where they specifically missed on these issues:
The developer had proposed to alleviate much of the Duplex and Port Royal traffic that exists now. Had they asked questions at the meeting, they would know. Instead, they took the word of a few that got in their ear that were against it - and presumed that everybody in the area felt the same.
Also, they clearly let their emotions blind their view on the Master Plan Committee formation. No excuses here, they simply voted against an item that they perceived to be a threat to their power.
There's a lot of corruption in Tennessee, but I didn't expect to find it in Spring Hill.
I'm not accusing anyone of corruption, but one has to wonder what keeps these people from thinking clearly. It should be obvious that we need a committee to study plans for the future of this out-of-control city.
I find myself agreeing with Gallardo and Duda. They seem to "get it".
Gorilla,
Have you seen today's Advertiser News?
In an article on the front page by Nancy Glasscock titled "Mayor Suggests Launching Committee to Study Reapportionment", Viola Pickard was quoted as saying:
"I was elected to represent all of you," she said. "So I get my feelings hurt when someone says I'm not doing that."
Do you think she was misquoted, or is she really that confused? Wasn't she appointed to fill Ted Roop's seat when he moved out of town, after the election?
tenscvols,
considering Mayor Danny Leverette was elected by a landslide-- Mayor has been earned. If you are so comfortable calling him by first name and criticizing him, I am sure you are comfortable calling him and letting him know your complaints instead of using this site, right? Mayor Leverette is an upstanding fellow and you should try stepping in his shoes in say... 3 years and 1 month! Then we will see if you can with stand what the Mayor has been through thus far. By the way, your language is inappropriate for such a forum.
Who is that who feels so compelled to kiss Danny's rear end so passionately? I bet he saves a fortune on toilet paper. Pickard was his pick. Do we need to elaborate? It was a mistake and everyone knows it. A landslide victory? Perhaps. But considering over 6000 people didn't even vote... I guess it depends on how you want to spin the numbers. That 3 years and 1 month would and should be 12 months if the man had any integrity at all.
Cantrell and Pickard are going to be replaced in the next election. Bank on it. At that point, Raines won't have any power whatsoever on the Board. The trick is going to be how minimizing the damage the city takes until we get to that point.
Danny seems to be catering to the majority vote rather than to his personal conviction. This is the mark of a poor leader, but it can be changed. He's going to have to learn how to walk the dog rather than letting the dog walk him. Perhaps if he wasn't so worried about trying to run for Senate in the future, he would be able to effectively lead the Board. I believe he has good intentions, but he needs to stop worrying about being on the losing side of a vote, take a stand and remain firm in his stance - whether he loses or not. Remaining firm even in the face of failure will gain him respect. Respect will gain him long-term victory. Until then, he's just another guy who was mayor in some small town somewhere in Tennessee. And the old school board members know that.
If I recall correctly Viola Pickard was the only citizen to come forward in Ward 4 after Alderman Ted Roop resigned. It's hard to pick from a pool of one. The true issue here is "reapportinment" and a pool of one validates the need.
Facts not half truths anon. 21:49.
I agree Ms. Pickard & Mrs. Cantrell will have a very tough time in 2007.
