State Rep Election - John Murphy

Spring Hill Alternate Questionnaire
for District 63 TN State Representative Candidates

Responses of John Murphy (D)

Question 1:
Please prioritize the following future proposed T-DOT projects that affect the Spring Hill region in order of what you feel are priorities. Also provide your understanding of the status for each project, the action that you would propose to see it completed and a realistic estimated completion date:

Question 2:
Is there a proposed project that has not been included in this list?

No Response

Question 3:
It has been said that an additional exit to Interstate 65 would alleviate much of the traffic strain to Highway 31 and would benefit the communities of Southern Williamson County tremendously. Where would you propose be the ideal location of an added exit to Interstate 65?

In the Duplex Road Area

Question 4:
Some would say that although Williamson County has seen exceptional growth in recent years in comparison to other areas of the state, the amount of state funding for T-DOT projects has not been proportional. What reasons would you attribute to this situation and how would you propose to increase the T-DOT funding that is allocated to projects in our region?

Glenn Casada. He has made too many enemies on Capitol Hill to get any help for our district. I promise that after I am elected, I will concentrate on working with state officials rather than fighting them. I am willing to work with anyone, regardless of political party, that is willing to address the needs of our district.

Question 5:
What is your view on illegal immigration and its effect on an industry that is arguably one of Southern Williamson County’s strongest economic industries, the building and housing industry?

My belief is that while immigration is fundamentally a federal issue; there are steps that the state can take in the absence of federal action.
I support the following plan.

• Securing America’s border: I fully supports the recent decision by Governor Phil Bredesen to deploy over 400 Tennessee National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to assist border patrol agents in stemming the flow of illegal immigrants into our country.

• Protecting the taxpayers of District 63: I support the ongoing efforts of the state to review all social service programs to ensure that illegal immigrants are not placing an undue burden on Williamson County taxpayers by drawing state services that they are barred by federal law from obtaining.

• Getting tough on employers: I fully support bringing all legal means to bear on employers that knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

• Filling the enforcement gap: I fully support improving communication between federal, state, and local law enforcement authorities so that we can identify, detain, and deport illegal immigrants. This does not mean simply shifting the cost of federal enforcement to state and local taxpayers. Immigrants that are detained by the criminal justice system should have their citizenship checked.

As your State Representative, I will fight to deliver meaningful immigration reform.

By following the four steps that I’ve outlined, we can make Tennessee a place that illegal immigrants avoid.

I do not believe that addressing the issue of illegal immigrants will affect the housing in Williamson County. I am a firm believer that there are no jobs Americans will not do if you give them a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. Demand will continue for housing even if contractors comply with the laws of our country and put honest Americans to work in place of illegal immigrants.

Question 6:
This past year, the State of Tennessee had a surplus of over $100,000,000 in estimated State Revenue. What programs would you like to see receive additional funding if future surpluses are realized?

I would like to see investments in our educational system. Our health care programs should be reformed to provide more affordable options for everyone. And hard working families that have tight budgets would be given some relief by a reduction in the sales tax on food products.

Question 7:
Would you support a “Jessica’s Law” which would establish a minimum 25-year sentence for anyone convicted of molesting a young child in the state of Tennessee?

Yes. No abuser of children should be treated gently by our legal system.

Question 8:
If you could say just one thing to convince Williamson County residents to come to the polls, what would it be?

Traffic! Our residents are tired of sitting in traffic and tired of Glen Casada sitting on his hands doing nothing about it.

Question 9:
Is there anything else that you would like Spring Hill Alternate readers to know about you or your campaign for TN State Representative?

My campaign has been very fortunate to have the support of Democrats, Independents and Republicans; they all know I will be a voice for everyone in our community because your voice is more important than those of the special interests that Glen Casada serves. You have my promise that I will not forget where I came from. I will support an increase in the minimum wage, I will support affordable health care, I will support pay equity for women, and I will support citizens with special needs by honoring any request for special needs administrator’s in our parks and recreation programs. I believe every family of Williamson County deserves to be treated equally. Glen Casada doesn’t.

My opponent voted against every attempt by the legislature to give the people of our community the treatment they deserve.

Maybe it's just me, but shouldn't a candidate for office be proud of the city that they want to represent?

John Murphy lives in Cherry Grove, in the city of Spring Hill. Everywhere I turn, he seems to be quick to distance himself from the city where he lives...

"My lovely wife, Tina, and I live in Thompson Station." - Campaign Website

"The reason for my Number one and two selection, fix the main providing roads first. However, they all our important to me, being a resident of Thompson Station." - Spring HIll Alternate Questionnaire Response

"The people of Nolensville don't want to see what happened with growth and traffic coming before the roads get fixed like what happend in Spring Hill" - WAKM 950AM Radio Candidate Forum, Wednesday October 18th, 2006

And then, today in the Tennessean:
Early voting kickoff largely trouble-free day in Midstate - One candidate leads horn protest over traffic jams

In Thompson's Station, 63rd District state House candidate John Murphy and a handful of supporters stood outside the Heritage School polling site holding signs that read: "Honk if you're fed up with Spring Hill traffic."

huh?

Does it make any sense to stand in front of a school zone in Thompson's Station and pooh pooh on Spring Hill, the city that you live in and want to represent? Next, he'll be standing in front of Thompson's Station Road and Hwy 31 at 5:00 with the same sign, blaming all of the traffic woes in Williamson County on Spring Hill.

He says that he wants to fix the traffic problem, yet 'Traffic' isn't even listed as one of his campaign priorities.

Finally, when asked in the Spring Hill Alternate Questionnaire about what he proposes to do regarding specific TDOT projects, he doesn't have a thing to say.

Anybody else find this concerning?

I think its great that somebody else is drawing big attention to the traffic issues... i have always used 31 N to get to work and take interstate to get home ...
It sucks Im sick of it !.. it is getting worse everyday .i just keep leaving my house earlier and eariler.. im still late!
and whats up with the traffic light in Thompson station light turns green 2 cars and go by then it turns back to red.. whats up with that ?? it's nice to see that somebody else cares.. no one else seems to.

I will be glad when the people who claim to live in Thompson's Station actually understand it is not Thompson Station......

It appears as if Silverback, et al not only play and fast lose with the facts but are geographically challenged. Cherry Grove is in Thompson Station and not Spring Hill. Remmember a few years ago when there was a battle to annex the small part of Spring Hill, in Williamson County, into Thompson Station? I would suspect Silverback is either creating facts that are not true to hear his own voice or owes money to Cassada? Either way someone needs to buy silverback and friends a map they are as unaware of political issues as they are their own city limits.

The signs held up on Oct.18th made no reference to Spring Hill but stated : "Honk if you are mad about traffic." I was glad to see Murphy's supporters out there to point out the real issue of this election. Unchecked growth with no reguard to infrustructer. Williamson County roads have not changed or been updated in forty years when Williamson was a small rural county.

Folks to much traffic creates traffic accidents. Traffic accidents cost lives. I am proud to see someone doing something about it. God knows Casada and his Klan care about one thing only. Making a profit from the misery of others. If you want to take a shot at John Murphy and his supporters who are willing to stand in traffic at 5:00 am to point out a serious problem, it is your right to do so. But do it with facts and truths not lies and half truths.

I do remember the battle to annex the Williamson Co land along Buckner Lane. Those tracts are the three or four tracts just EAST of CHERRY GROVE and NORTH of SPRING HILL PLACE on the Spring Hill Zoning Map.

Cherry Grove is definately in Spring Hill, served by Spring Hill sewer.

What on earth is John Murphy doing about traffic by standing in a road asking people to honk about it?

Give me details about what his proposed solution is! His solution seems to be a blank sheet of paper.

Live in Williamson County and District 63, but not Spring Hill or Thompson Station. Just to let you know I'm not in that hunt.

I have been, however, looking and researching my plans for voting. Thanks to this posting, my decision has been made.

Glen Casada has some problems, and I disagree with him on a couple of issues. However, Mr. Murphy has supplied no answers on the questionaire other than to blame Casada. His short answers offer no insight into his thoughts, other than to blame someone else for issues that are way more complex. Sorry Mr. Murphy, but you seem to be lacking in what I think we need--solutions, or at least plans.

Good luck to Mr. Casada.

Same boat.

I'm seeing Murphy's signs all over town, but never knew much about him. It appears that he's running an anti-Casada campaign, instead of a pro-Murphy campaign.

Makes me wonder who's behind all of this.

Silverback and friends appear to have some sort of inferiority complex regarding Spring Hill. What do they think is so wrong with Spring Hill that somebody would purposely want to deny their residency here? I personally am proud of Spring Hill, see nothing wrong with it that anyone should want to shun, and believe that Silverback and friends are showing their own bias toward the town rather than revealing John Murphy's. Also, he or she points out that Spring Hill has many more voters than Thompson Station, but then suggests that John Murphy is identifying himself as a resident of Thompson Station for political gain. Silberback and friends should try the fully caffeinated choices at Starbucks.

Regarding the Anti-Casada BS, it doesn't seem like Silverback and friends get the choice that the other candidate is offering. From what I've seen, he has been saying that Casada is more worried about making enemies of TDOT than working with them. I wonder what Mr. Murphy's plan would be? I'll give you a minute to think... It's not hard... Come on, you can do it!!! OK, give up? How about working with TDOT and not making enemies of them? How about using TDOT data to determine the true priorities rather than saying the feel good stuff to get yourself elected? How about working with political reality and working with the Governor rather than being a whiney brat that is trying to piss off daddy?

Guess who I'm for... I'll give you a minute or two...

To Tenscvols:

It of course is not my intent to push people away from a good candidate. But the frustration I feel with campaigns having to spend most of their time to "clear the smear" is shared by many. In the Fox News world of politics, issues must be buried under BS. It is not a world of the strong surviving, but the one who can throw around the most money and perform the greater slight of hand around the issues that really matter.

If you are frustrated with the concocted smear that gets us off of the issues, then post an issues based comment, either side, and enjoy democratic discourse that is worthy of our country.

My apologies to anyone offended, for other than politically expedient reasons, by the last post.

On second thought:

Let me be honest. I am extremely tired and stressed. Someone very dear to me is in an awful battle with cancer. Between that and turmoil on the work front, I haven't gotten any sleep for about five weeks.

I have met both the candidates and they both seem like good guys. I am sure we will be OK with either of them. I think I'll vote for Murphy because I believe he'll have a better relationship with TDOT. But that is just my guess. I could be wrong.

I apologize to Silverback and everyone for intruding with my fatigue ridden sarcasm. I NEED SLEEP BAD!!!

I'm going to say my goodbye's and leave you all to it. I genuinely wish luck to both candidates and I just hope they keep it a good fair fight. It really would be a cool thing to see that.

Goodbye all.

The only way you can get on better terms with TDOT is to vote for a state income tax. That's why Williamson county is on the bottom of the list for state road improvements, our reps are being punished for their no votes.

My point, exactly! Up until recently, I was very much undecided on my vote. The full page ad on Sunday in the Williamson AM basically soldified what my gut was telling me - something (rather, someone) big is behind John Murphy, and his "aw shucks, it's all Glen's fault" attitude isn't going to quite cut it. Full page ads cost $$$$ (ask WMC and MRH). Talk is cheap.

I have said it before, and I'll ask again... What specifically is John Murphy going to do to get TDOT projects done in Southern Williamson County? He still hasn't provided any solutions to the problem, although everywhere I turn he's out there screaming about it.

Anonymous said...

I will say this, I e-mailed a question to both candidates and John Murphy was the only one to reply. The question was not related to TDOT or road projects. I still have heard nothing from Casada. Murphy may not be sincere but he at least took the time to respond.

be safe all

Silverback said...

Apparently I'm not the only one concerned about Murphy's 'It's all Glen's fault' rhetoric:

Casada's got a grip on traffic issues

Dustin Dunbar says:

If Mr. Murphy understood the position he was running for, he might find that all road-building decisions are made by the Department of Transportation, not the legislature. To get these projects started, we must have state funding. Unfortunately, the governor transferred more than $300 million out of our highway fund to the general fund.

Then again, Jim Brandau had this to say in rebuttal this morning:

Stuck in traffic? Vote for Murphy

Candidate Murphy does understand how the process works for these types of projects and understands it well. Fact is the Tennessee Department of Transportation does have a long-term plan for road projects in Tennessee.

Mr. Brandau goes on to ask why hasn't Casada done more to further specific projects in Southern Williamson County.

Fact is, John Murphy still doesn't have a thing to say about what he would do to see these projects get completed more quickly.

not 1 but 2 full page ads in the paper today

somebody is paying for all of this. di they really think that a republican county will vote in a democrat?

Anonymous said...

I would like for Mr. Murphy to tell us who he thinks Glen Casada's enemies are, what special interest groups he's serving, and what specific votes he's referring to. If you are going to make these kinds of accusations they should have some facts to go with them. Glen Casada ALWAYS returns our email and gets back to us as soon as its possible. We just met him in February. He is well liked at every public event he attends, and I'm not just talking about Republican events. He remembers so many people's names and faces that it it is mind blowing. That is some one who listens and cares. What will a representative Murphy do that is better than what Representative Casada has done and is doing?
