Campaign Finances

On April 5th, candidates who have spent over $1,000 on their campaign were required to file a Campaign Financial Disclosure Statement with the Maury County Election Commission for contibutions and expenditures through April 2nd. Candidates who did not file have either spent less then $1,000 or are in violation of state campaign disclosure laws.

Candidates are required to list Itemized Contributions, In-Kind Contributions, Expenditures, Loans and Obligations over $100. Interesting stuff to say the least. I'll be commenting on some of this once I have had a chance to go over them in detail. Until then, enjoy...

Ward 1 Candidates

Michael Dinwiddie - Spent: $929.80

Ward 2 Candidates

Looks like McCulloch, Gabriel, and Pickard decided not to turn in their financial reports.

I wonder who contributed there?

Anonymous said...

Especially with Viola's first sign and Sharron's sign looking so similar? :)

Anonymous said...

i was told McCulloch did not take contributions! He spent all of his own money

On the positive side of things:

It looks like Mike Dinwiddie knows how to get a lot done for the money. Compare what he has done with his $900 to what others have done with 4 times as much money.

runnerboymog, thank you. I am not the only one working. If anyone deserves credit for getting the vote out, it is Rick Graham.

I do have an URGENT REQUEST:

We need people to go out and vote. I don't know that the online poll will be reflective of the city results or not. What I gain from it is that there are a certain number of people who are voting for me. I would like to request that each of you who have decided to give me your vote or confidence please go out and talk to 5 or 10 people and encourage them to go vote. Drive them if you have to - or call me and I will personally drive them myself.

If you are interested, here's how my schedule has gone since Sunday:
Sunday - didn't campaign. Thought about it, but didn't.
Monday:
2AM - 4AM Picked up signs and placed some around the fire station. Others went towards that giant "D" at the Saturn and Port Royal intersection. Then slept for 2 hours.
6:30AM - 8AM Compiled lists of registered voters and their subdivisions.
8:30AM - 6:30PM Placed well over 500 flyers on people's doors. Walked over 20 miles. Skipped lunch. Skipped dinner.
7PM Went to BOMA work session.
8:30PM - 12AM Went home and started hand-writing posters to be placed at specific subdivisions.
Tuesday (today):
12AM - 3AM Placed hand-written signs around town and picked up campaign signs. Then slept.
5:30AM - 8AM Compiled new lists of registered voters.
8AM - 1PM Placed flyers on people's doors, covering roughly 7 miles.
5PM -12AM Scheduled to fly Hank Williams Jr.

I will pick up signs and distribute cards when I get home from my flight at around 2AM. Unless I have a flight, I don't intend to sleep until ALL of my material has been distributed. I've pulled my Achilles tendon, blown out a tire, had the cops called on me, completely destroyed a pair of shoes and lost over 25 pounds since March 1 (about 1/2 a pound PER DAY).

Why do I tell you all of this? So that the idea of all of you going out and telling 5 people to vote might not seem like such a difficult task. I am more than willing to work hard for the city, but I now need to ask for your help and I will only request that you do a very, very small percent of what I am doing. By working together, we will win this thing and the city can begin to make progress with a unified Board.
Thank you very much for all of your support.
Mike

That may have come out as more personalized than I intended it to. While I can only speak for myself, I in no way mean to imply that the other candidates aren't working hard. I know that Bruce has spoken to voters and his family has gone with him. I know that Rick gets up every morning at around 4AM and repairs or replaces his signs and then comes home from work early to go talk to voters. I know that Elliot spends hours on the phone talking to constituents. In fact, I can only think of two candidates who don't seem to have a pulse in this election. By in large, everyone is working as hard as they can afford to and deserves credit for caring about this city enough to make the sacrifices they have.

So when you talk to your neighbors and friends, make sure you remember the candidates in all the Wards when you make your recommendations.

I also haven't been alone in my campaign. I have had some help in various subdivisions. I won't mention their names because they haven't told me I can, but to all of you who are helping - I GREATLY appreciate it.

Mike,
I love the big "D" at Port Royal and Saturn Parkway. It truly adds to the beautification of our city. I cannot wait to see your other ideas for city beautification. If you allow the developers to build in the same manner as you place your signs, I am sure they will absolutely love you (as many as can fit in a small space). I applaud you on all of your campaign stunts and effort, but let's keep in mind that the ability to trash the city with signs and walk long distances does not make you any more qualified to be an Alderman than it makes me qualified to pilot an airplane. It comes down to experience and vision for the city. As another poster put it, those that are going to the polls are going with the knowledge of where each of us stands on the issues, and the amount of signs that we put up is not going to change how we stand on the issues. Ultimately, the voters will elect the person who they feel best represents their vision for the city. It is because of this that I have decided to keep my campaigning more low key, tasteful and respectful of our city and it's residents, choosing not to assault them with signs and invade their personal space to force my campaign upon them. Best of luck to you on Thursday.

I personally think that we need to get in touch with Hank and tell him his pilot has had "No" sleep. That sounded more like a plea for the simpathy vote. Everybody has worked hard Mike and everyone could post the same hard working stories as you. We will get you a new pair of shoes after you are defeated, that is the least we can do.

I will appreciate the new shoes. Thank you.

Tenscvols, it was just informational. Inevitably in conversation people ask me who I fly. I certainly have nothing to gain by dropping names, but some people might consider it a point of interest. Sorry if that rubbed you the wrong way. I'll certainly keep it in mind for the future. The same goes for posting a couple of days of my campaign schedule. Some people might be naturally interested in "what are these guys doing exactly"? I thought I made it clear that other candidates are working as hard or harder on their campaigns. I personally take zero credit for a win if that should happen. And if I lose, then I lose. No big deal. At least I lose knowing that I gave every last ounce of energy right to the very end.

As far as listing my personal hardships, I think people are naturally inclined to offer assistance to those who are out there physically sacrificing. I'm pretty sure that if I came out and said, "Hey guys I need your help. I'm not doing anything, but you need to help me", I would be waiting a long time for assistance. Obviously there are those who disagree with me. Personally, I'm willing to continue working as hard as I physically can whether I'm alone or not. That's the only way I can walk away from this with my head up.

Just my two cents (which is probably overpriced).

Michael, don't let these negative people get to you. They are losing and can think of nothing better to do than to attack you. I apprecaite letting me have a glimpse of your schedule. I always wondered what it was like to run for office. i would like to hear from some of the other candidates to see how their strategies were different. Walking across the city and meeting as many people as posible shows that you are dedicated and commited to a cause - both are things needed in Alderman. Making homemade signs and putting a D in the grass shows that you can think outside the box and try new things. I haven't forgotten the Benefit you had for the Children's Home either. It is true that if you want people to follow you then you need to be able to do the job yourself. No one helps the helpless. I will talk to as many people as I can. Good luck. I hope you win.

We have a US Senator that won largely because he was willing to walk across the state and meet the people. If it's good enough to win a Senate seat then it's good enough for Alderman.

Boy MR. 23:13 you just really showed your air in between those ears with that post. If that wasn't the stupidiest thing I had ever heard, I would say that you are blind in both eyes. Good thing you posted anonymous.

Senator Lamar Alexander walked across this state and won Governor when nobody gave him a shot.

Anonymous said...

He also walked for Senator.

Tim, you really need to use a spellcheck.

Anonymous @ 2006,

If you are posting in reference to my financial disclosure statement and where it shows I purchased campaign signs from "Premium Graphicx"...yeah, that'd actually be the name of the company. Don't believe me? (http://www.signelect.com/contactus.htm) So in all actuality, other candidates that purchased signs from this distributor that stated "Premium Graphics" or any other name, actually got it wrong. Before you call someone out on a grammatical error, make sure it's a valid point you're trying to make!

Interesting! Mitchell's financial statement shows $1753 in unitemized contributions. Could it be that he has hidden this money from his "special interest groups"?

And the $200 from Larry Kloess (HCA)? Hmmm....did Eliot have an ulterior motive in working to get the hospital here,

or did Leverette suggest that Kloess contribute to Eliot's compaign?

Anonymous said...

No Tim, I'm referring to your anonymous posts on this blog. I couldn't care less about your Financial Disclosure statement.

One problem there anonymous @ 2100, I don't post anonymously and don't intend on it. If I have something to say, I'll always put my name behind it...good guess though, maybe one day you'll get it right!
